RSPCA Calls for Dog Licensing

Thu, 03 Jun 2010

The RSPCA has revealed an alarmingly high number of phone calls from the public about pet dogs being abandoned. Between January and April, the animal charity received a total of 3,500 calls from concerned members of the public, while the organisation took in nearly 5,000 disowned dogs . The figures equate to a call every hour, highlighting the problem of poorly treated and unwanted animals in the UK.

The figures have fuelled calls for dog licensing laws to be introduced, as the RSPCA looks to clamp down on irresponsible dog owners. Indeed, the RSPCA is to increase its efforts to develop proposals that would require dog owners to hold a dog licence, in the hope that such regulations would dissuade owners from abandoning their pets, and help to trace those who do dump their animals.

The RSPCA recently questioned dog owners on their thoughts regarding the scheme, finding that two thirds of respondents would be happy to agree to such legislation. Vets and the RSPCA have long called for the compulsory microchipping of dogs, which offers another solution of cracking down on irresponsible owners.
