Dog Control Orders Anger Weymouth Residents

Tue, 02 Mar 2010

Pet owners in Weymouth and Portland have been angered by the council’s decision to pass a number of controversial dog control orders . Dog owners must now keep their pets on leads on public land at all sites in the area except the Rodwell Trail and the Telford Close recreation grounds. Council officers have also been granted the power to instruct animal owners to put their dogs on leads, while they also have the authority to issue fines to owners who fail to do so. Owners may also received a fixed penalty fine for failing to clear up their animals mess.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council passed the orders despite months of vocal opposition from local animal owners. Critics have claimed the orders fail to discriminate between responsible and irresponsible dog owners, while opponents point out that they have no problem with the control order which targets dog owners who fail to clear up after their pets - something which can pose dangers to other dogs, according to vets .

There was two hours of heated debate prior to the passage of the new dog control orders, with members of the public voicing their opinions, and the council’s community safety spokesman Ian James saying the existing laws were not fit for purpose.
