Dog Owners Warned of Rising Cost of Vet Bills

Tue, 16 Mar 2010

Saga pet insurance has claimed that the average cost of the annual vet bill in the UK has doubled since 2006. The insurance provider revealed that uninsured pet owners are shelling out an average of £598 on vets bills over the course of a year, representing an 11 per cent increase in the past two years.

Saga have released the figures to highlight the potential hazards of not having a pet insurance policy . Chief Executive of Saga Group Ltd, Andrew Goodsell, suggested that pet insurance was vital for pet owners to protect themselves against unforeseen costs for their cats or dogs .

Mr Goodsell advised the over 50s in particular to take out pet insurance for their animals . One in five over 50s have pets, but many older citizens have seen their income reduced by the credit crunch, and the reduced interest being paid on savings . As a result, they may be unable to pay any unexpected vet bills for their cat or dog .

The government is currently considering proposals which would make pet insurance compulsory for all dog owners, as part of a series of measures designed to crack down on dangerous dogs .
