West Somerset Council has introduced new laws banning dogs from certain sites in the area. The district council claims the new measures have been introduced to protect public health, though unhappy dog owners are unlikely to be placated by the reasoning. The restrictions will come into effect on March 31st, and will see pet dogs banned from 20 sites, including sea fronts, parks and play areas. Animal owners will also be forced to keep their pets on leads at a further six areas in the region.
Vets have warned of the dangers of having dog mess in children’s play areas, so while pet owners may understand the ban on dogs in those areas, the decision to extend the ban to other areas is likely to have upset animal owners.
West Somerset Council consulted parish and town councils to see if they supported the measures. The councils responded with a list of areas where they felt the new laws could be useful, and West Somerset Council says it consulted the public before deciding to bring in the orders under the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act .
