North Lanarkshire Council has announced that it is to increase the fee payable by the owners of stray dogs to be reunited with their pets . The council previously charged an initial £72.04 to animal owners wishing to be reunited with their pets, plus an extra £13.50 for each day that dogs were held in kennels . The council is set to change the payable fee, however, to a flat fee of £125.
In an effort to encourage the microchipping of dogs – as has been suggested by the RSPCA and vets – the council will microchip any animal it picks up, and will return the animal for free to its owner, with a warning that the return fee will be applicable in the event of a repeat.
The council previously placed each stray dog found in kennels at Bothwell Bridge Animal Welfare Centre at a cost of £275 as part of their agreement with the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA). Under the new agreement, however, stray dogs will be placed in Allers Kennels in High Blantyre. Any dogs who remain in the kennels for over seven days will either be rehomed by the Dogs Trust or placed into the care of the SSPCA.
