Dog Owners Advised of Travel Dangers

Tue, 25 May 2010

Pet health experts are advising animal owners to be extremely careful and vigilant when travelling abroad with their pets this summer . While many pet owners are expected to leave their animals in the care of friends, family or kennels, vets are warning animal owners to keep monitoring the wellbeing of their pet if travelling long distances with their animals this summer.

Dogs are one of the likeliest pets to be taken on holiday with their owners, prompting vets to urge dog owners to make regular stops while travelling to ensure the dog doesn’t become exhausted by the heat, while it is also vital to ensure that the dogs crate is secured in the car so that it doesn’t move around. Animal owners are also advised not to allow their dog to sit in the car with its head out of the window as there are a number of risks.

With the recent spell of hot weather, and the summer approaching, dog owners will soon face frequent and important reminders of the dangers of leaving their pet in a car for any length of time. Each summer brings tragic cases of an animal dying from heat exhaustion having been left in a car, even for a relatively short period of time.
