Vets are advising pet owners to ensure that their pets collars are the correct fit to avoid discomfort and potentially harmful consequences for their animal . Many owners buy a collar for their animals – dogs in particular – when they are a puppy in order to take the dog on walks while wearing a lead, and to help identify the animal. In some cases, however, owners view the collar as one-size-fits-all, and fail to replace the collar, or check whether it fits, as the dog grows.
Animal experts advise owners that they should be able to slip two fingers under the collar, and that a new collar should be bought if this is no longer possible. While regularly replacing a collar during the pets early years would clearly become very expensive, it is possible to buy a cheaper adjustable nylon loop for puppies while they are still growing, though once they have reached their likely size and weight it is advisable to buy a proper collar.
A tight collar may not only cause irritation to the animal, especially in the summer months, it could also cause the animal difficulty breathing.
