The dog rehoming website DogsBlog.com has reported a 100 per cent increase in the number of puppies being abandoned in the UK over the past 12 months. While the rise in the number of unwanted animals has been well documented, particularly in relation to the increasing number of illegal dog breeds in the UK, these latest figures highlight the severe increase in the number of dogs being abandoned between the ages of 7 weeks and 12 months.
The increase is putting great stress on the animal charity sector, with each unwanted dog costing the sector more than £6.50 every day according to estimates. It is this snowballing cost that has lead vets and animal experts to speculate that the animal welfare system in the UK is becoming unsustainable, as demonstrated by the recent decision by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to put down a number of healthy dogs.
In light of the figures, former professional dog trainer and co-founder of DogsBlog.com, Ryan O’Meara, has called for pet owners to be more meticulous in their thought and planning for getting a pet. O’Meara believes people should be more thorough in their research, and has also appealed for greater regulation of dog breeders .
