Police in Carnforth are asking dog owners to keep their dogs on leads after an alleged attack in which a sheep was killed.
Several incidents have been reported to the police from farmers where pregnant ewes and new-born lambs were harassed by dogs .
A sheep was recently found dumped in a bush on a farm after its throat had been ripped out apparently by a dog.
This time of year is particularly delicate as farms are in the throws of the lambing season.
Pets owners can be fined under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 if their pets are caught harassing or chasing livestock.
PC Anthony Marsh, community beat manager for Silverdale and Warton said, "Unfortunately, each year sheep are killed by dogs which have been let off their leads in fields that contain livestock.
"Owners may believe that their pets will not harm the animals but a loose dog is distressing for the sheep and on occasion dogs do attack, and these attacks can be fatal."
