The renowned model Twiggy is urging dog fans to adopt greyhounds from an animal charity which has over 1,000 retired running dogs currently living in its kennels .

The 61-year-old star has lent her support to Britain's Retired Greyhound Trust after hearing the animals are one of the least likely dogs to be adopted by owners.

Twiggy, who is patron of the Trust's Kent branch, said: "Greyhounds make fantastic pets . They undergo a transformation when they leave the track. They turn from speed machines to docile couch potatoes. I am devastated to hear about the Trust's struggle and the dropping numbers of people adopting these docile darlings. I would urge anyone who is considering a dog to think greyhounds."

The model admitted that she was moved to work with the charity after she saw an advertisement to house two retired greyhounds when she took her pet cat to the vet in 2004.
