The cost of keeping a dog can amount to more than £30,000 in a dog's lifetime, according to a new survey conducted by Good Housekeeping magazine .
The magazine revealed the figure after taking into account costs such as food, grooming, vets bills and insurance . With 30 pets a day being abandoned by their owners, pet insurance provider helpucover says people should make sure that they really can afford to keep a dog before they purchase it.
Helpucover also reported that the average cost of treating a fractured leg for a dog is £776, while Good Housekeeping estimates average annual veterinary costs to be £280.
Caroline Bloor, consumer editor at Good Housekeeping, hopes the survey will lead to fewer pets being abandoned by owners unaware of the likely costs. She said: "We hope this study will help people understand that pets can be expensive and go some way towards stopping unwanted healthy animals being left at rescue centres and in the worst cases, being put down."
