University of Portsmouth introduces DNA testing for dogs

Thu, 10 Mar 2011

The University of Portsmouth is launching a new service which offers DNA testing for dogs .

The service will provide a range of genetic tests, including paternity testing and the identification of recessive genes which can result in canine illnesses in certain breeds. The tests may help breeders identify the best mating partner for their dog and will allow breeders to offer a guarantee that their dogs will not be stricken with the characteristic disease for that breed.

According to Dr Garry Scarlett, from the University's School of Biological Sciences, many canine diseases are due to genetic problems which have built up over a number of years and which can be traced to a single gene.

He said: "There are many canine diseases which are associated with one particular gene and for which the breed is well-known. Many conditions reveal themselves only after a year or two by which time it's too late and dogs can go through a great deal of unnecessary suffering. Most owners and breeders want the best for their dogs and if they're aware of a dogs genetic health they can make the best breeding choices and fewer pups will be born with genetic problems."
