Activists and figures from the China Small Animal Protection Association rescued about 500 canines destined to become dog food in China.
The action took place last April 15 when activists intercepted a truck carrying the animals in Beijing and used their own money to buy the dogs from the driver.
The animals, crowded into cages, were being taken to Northeast China to be sold to restaurants . Dog meat has been eaten for many centuries in China, where a great number of people believe that it has medicinal properties.
Following the incident, some animals were taken to more than 20 veterinary hospitals, while others were taken to recover at the association's headquarters, where a retired 80 year old man and his daughter appeared with a car full of dog food to donate to the charity . The founder of the Small Animal Protection Association, Lu Di, said that Chinese law does not protect the pets properly, necessitating ordinary citizens to defend them on their own initiative.
