Dog Attacks on the Increase

Fri, 25 Nov 2011

The number of victims treated for dog attacks over the last ten month period has increased.

Met Police statistics showed that its expenditure was £2million in 2010 for kennelling dangerous dogs .

This figure includes almost £250,000 on veterinary fees, an increase of £100,000 from the £150,000 four years earlier.

It may be time to amend the Dangerous Dogs Act, given that Department of Health figures show that in the ten months from June 2010 almost 5,000 of us were treated in hospital for dog bites, with 456 of these cases being based in London.

The last consultation regarding dangerous dogs was in June 2010 undertaken by the Labour Government; this government has done precisely nothing for 16 months. Ministers are not in touch with the plight of families of dog attack victims, and Londoners particularly want much tighter controls on so called "status" dogs.

A proportion of the £2 million spent annually on dog kennelling and vet fees would be better spent on policing.
