Double the Number of Dogs Being Put Down in Sheffield Compound

Tue, 22 Nov 2011

Double the numbers of dogs are being put down at Sheffield Council’s pound.

This figure has doubled in the last year, with the Council having put 137 dogs to sleep in 2010/11, in comparison to 66 in 2009/2010.

The RSPCA attributes this increase to the recession, with the number of unwanted dogs who need homes as ‘a ticking time bomb waiting to go off’.

Families need to tighten their financial purses so pets are losing out with an increasing number of animals being abandoned. Dog wardens are left with the unenviable task of picking abandoned dogs off the street.

As yet there does not appear to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

There has been an increase in the number of dogs that are rescued and adopted, however that is not enough to keep up with the numbers of dogs being admitted.
