Mans Bests Friend Friend is His Dog Study Launched

Fri, 04 Nov 2011

University of Manchester researchers have started one of the biggest studies into the relationship between man and his ‘best friend’ to uncover how humans have affected the characteristics of domestic dogs by means of feeding, dog breeding, dog training and interaction.

The study, entitled ‘Pedigree Chums: Science, Medicine and the Remaking of the Dog in the Twentieth Century’, is going to explore the role humans have played in the increase of pure bred dogs.

The concern is so great that three years ago the RSPCA and BBC pulled out of the dog show Cruft’s given their concerns about the health of pedigree dogs .

The concept of the dog being ‘man's best friend’ is a modern one which defines the position of dogs as a domestic companion.

Dogs play a huge part in people’s lives, especially in the West. This role has been widely neglected by social scientists.

The study is going to highlight how changing ideas and practices in relation to dog breeding, feeding, dog training and treatment have redefined the modern dog, whether it be as a pet, a show dog or working animal.
