Many handbag dogs are being abandoned.
They were purchased as a fashion accessory, often because people have seen a Hollywood celebrity with one.
The reality of the situation is that the so called accessory is an animal which needs looking after.
The Blue Cross animal shelter has taken in 200 such handbag dogs during 2011, a figure which has tripled since 2006.
During September, the Dogs Trust reported a 44 per cent increase in tiny puppies being abandoned or passed on throughout the UK.
Experts in the field stated that this trend is likely to continue,
As people like Paris Hilton ditch their tiny dogs, many hundreds of Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus as well as Pomeranians are abandoned as their fashion trend conscious owners follow suit.
Dogs are the end of the day are dogs and need to run about, mix and be treated like dogs . They are not designed to sit in handbags. A lot of the dogs at the animal shelter are not even able to walk when they arrive.
