As a nation we overfeed and overindulge our dogs which leaves many of them overweight .
Britain may be known as a nation of dog lovers, however, the way in which we feed them unhealthy treats is causing a pet obesity epidemic .
A recent health report on this country's nation's pets has highlighted that 12 million of them are being given too many fatty treats which include cakes, chess, crisps and takeaways every day.
The veterinary charity, PDSA, stressed that dog owners do not necessarily consider the damage being done. Approximately 50 per cent of dog owners think that treats make their pets happy, with just 2 per cent feeling guilty when they give their dog or cat a high-calorie snack.
More than six million dogs are being given junk food. The research involved questioning more than 11,000 pet owners in 2010.
Pets need to be on diets appropriate to their age, needs and body size.
