The RSPCA has commended a site, dubbed Facebark, which enables dog owners to locate their lost pets, giving the site a national award.
Earlier this year Middlesbrough Council's dog warden service set up a page on Facebook where pictures of dogs that have been found are posted.
It also shares photos of animals it wishes to re-home and uses the site to disseminate messages about micro-chipping pets .
The pioneering page has been dubbed Facebark by Council chiefs and has been awarded the RSPCA's Community Animal Welfare Footprints (CAWF) Innovator Awards.
The judges commended that the site was unique, highly effective and a well orchestrated idea.
The page presently has 1,400 plus followers with approximately 20,000 monthly hits and has enabled many dogs to be reunited with owners and re-homed.
