Vancouver city hall is getting serious and tough with individuals whose dogs bite.
The city council is raising dog licence fees as well as engineering and building fees.
The council is also amending its animal-control bylaw necessitating people to not permit their dogs to "bite, attack or otherwise physically injure" individuals or other animals.
The dog control section spend nearly half their time dealing with complaints about dog bites with 250 such cases being investigated in 2010.
Every case has to be investigated and then it has to be determined whether or not to prosecute and take the case to court.
It has to be decided whether a fine needs levying and an order for the destruction of the dog sought.
The city is still going to refer serious cases for prosecution, however, it wishes to quicken the process and cut court time.
