130 Per Cent Increase in Stray Dogs in Just One Year

Wed, 21 Sep 2011

The number of stray dogs that are put sleep in Scotland by local authorities has increased by 130% in just one year.

The Dogs Trust, an animal charity has published figures which show that 94 dogs were put down in 2010, with that figure jumping to 217 in 2011.

The increase is surprising, given the 9% decrease in the number of stray dogs that are collected by dog wardens, down from 6109 in 2010 to 5889 in 2011.

The charity added that the number of stray dogs reunited with the relevant dog owners in Scotland has also dropped by 7% from 3605 in 2010 to 3363 in 2011.

The 2011 annual Stray Dogs Survey demonstrated that the UK’s stray and abandoned dog numbers are at an 11-year high with more than 126,000 dogs having been picked up by UK local authorities in the last 12 months.

This marks an increase of 4% on 2010, with approximately 345 stray dogs being put down every day.

In many cases the owners have rejected their pets, not taken into consideration the full demands of a dog and the financial considerations involved.
