Dog Attacks Costs in Injuries and Pounds

Horrendous dog attacks meant that about 17 people ended up in hospital every day last year.

6,120 victims were hurt so badly by savage dogs that they had to be admitted to hospital, at a cost of £9.5 million to the National Health Service.

This figure is based on £1,500 for the cost of treatment of each victim.

This huge financial burden on the NHS became apparent upon a six year old girl having her ear bitten off in a park in Chingford, Essex, by a dog last Saturday.

The girl’s father urged for governmental action against such dogs .

On Monday, owner Gary Hindley, 56, pleaded guilty to permitting his Staffie "Buddy" to cause injury and be dangerously out of control in a public place. He is going to receive his sentence next month.

After a Daily Mirror campaign, the last Labour Government announced plans to introduce animal Asbos and compulsory micro-chipping of dogs.

They also intended to extend the law to cover more than the four dog breeds which are presently outlawed.

The cost of dog attacks to the NHS was discovered by the Humber Public Health Observatory, when considering cases in two health authority areas over the last two years.
