Pet insurance firm celebrates unusual claims

A pet insurance company in the US is now asking for people to vote on who should win its annual Hambone Award – honouring the most unusual claims of the year.

Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) is offering a $10,000 (£6,222) prize to the animal hospital which treated the winner of the competition.

Among the nominees this year are a cocky mix-breed dog which survived a fight with a deer after running out of the family garden and a 2-year-old pup which suffered alcohol poisoning after helping himself to 24 unbaked bread dough rolls.

Another pooch in the running is Chance the Labrador – who was headbutted by a neighbour’s goat before being sent flying into the animal pen’s fencing.

VPI is asking for people to vote for their favourite story by October 11th – with a total of 11 animals to choose from.

Previous winners include a bulldog who swallowed 15 baby’s dummys and another dog which got into a fight with a skunk.

Perhaps the most unusual story over the years is reserved for a Labrador who had a lucky escape after eating a whole beehive and its inhabitants.
