Owners of dozens of less than handsome dogs across the world are gathering in Petaluma, California for the World’s Ugliest Dog competition.
Famous US radio hosts Bob and Sheri are to kick off proceedings later this week when judging starts on June 21st at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.
But this year is extra special for fans of the unique mutts as it is the event’s 25 year anniversary – having started in 1988.
Some 25 contestants have so far signed up for the contest and around half are new entrants to the competition.
Breeds expected to be represented include mongrels, pugs, terriers, boxers and, of course, the Chihuahua.
Event producer Vicki DeArmon said: “The announcement of the winner each year ricochets around the world with that dog’s photo being shared from China to Bolivia to France.”
Last year’s winner – a Chinese Crested canine called Mugly – is expected to take part again to defend his crown, although stiff competition from others, including Purple Polka, is expected to give him a run for his money.
