Expert says dog food could be killing your canine

The food we give to our dogs could actually be detrimental to their health, according to a nutrition expert.

Jonathan Self, author of Honey’s Natural Feeding Handbook for Dogs, will accuse leading dog food manufacturers of knowingly shortening the lives of millions of dogs each year in a Channel 5 documentary, to be broadcast on Thursday (January 30th).

In an article for the Daily Mail, he claims that feeding your dog processed food - whether dried, tinned or in a pouch - could have serious consequences for its wellbeing. He believes that nine out of ten vet appointments are caused by canines being fed the wrong diet.

The problem with a lot of dog food is that it "has been cooked and it contains a great deal of grain", according to Mr Self. The cooking "kills off important enzymes in the food and alters its structure, making it hard for the dog to digest."

Mr Self believes a dog requires the same diet as as a grey wolf in the wild, as their digestive systems are identical. This means that a diet of raw meat, raw bones and raw herbage would be ideal.
