Most dog owners treat their pets for the effects of fleas and worms, however, there are other parasites out there which pet owners need to be aware of.
One such parasite is toxocara not only is this harmful to pets but can also, in rare cases cause blindness in humans. This parasites eggs are passed on through animal faeces. The risk is huge when dog owners do not pick up the mess their dog leaves but even if it is, the eggs can remain on the soil or grass so can still be harmful. This is why dogs are not normally allowed in children’s play areas. The eggs can also be harmful in the home as they can stick to the dog’s fur and be transferred to objects and areas around the home.
Experts warn that other parasites like fleas, ticks and mites need to be taken more seriously. Fleas like cats and dogs because of the warmth and humidity caused by their body heat. These little insects can spread around an owners home if a cat or dog becomes infected.
Fleas are bad enough but some fleas also carry tapeworm larvae. These can be ingested by a cat or dog while they groom themselves, they will go on to develop tapeworm.
Something else that can be harmful to our dogs which many people are not aware of and they have multiplied greatly recently due to the wet and warm weather – slugs and snails. Found in most gardens, they carry the lungworm parasite which can be fatal for dogs.
To find out more about harmful parasites and how they affect the health and wellbeing of our pets a series of videos have been launched presented by David Bellamy and veterarian Steve Leonard. Each video will focus on a specific parasite and the risks to the animal and the family. For more information please go to itsajungle.co.uk.
