A dog rescue charity has spent a small fortune on a TV advert it hopes will encourage people to make room in their home for an abandoned animal.
Whitehall Dog Rescue in East Ardsley, Leeds, is full to capacity and has turned to commercial advertising in order to find owners for some of its 35 pooches, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.
Owner of the facility Brian Wheelhouse stated the number of dogs being abandoned around the city is at its highest since he began rescuing animals 21 years ago.
He was quoted as saying: “These dogs are dying, they have not done anything to deserve to be put to sleep and if we can manage to do these adverts to save a dog, that’s what it’s all about.”
The package of adverts set the charity back around £30,000 and will be shown during ITV1’s daytime schedule until February 26th.
According to the news provider, more than 3,000 dogs have been impounded by Leeds City Council dog wardens since 2009, while 250 pooches had to be put down by the service in 2011 alone.
