Behavioural training should be considered for dogs

Owners wanting to make sure their dogs behave well when let off the lead may want to invest in some specialist lessons.

Steven Havers, dog behaviour expert at Havers Specialised Dog Training, has recommended people take their animal to good behavioural training.

Mr Havers explained it is not sufficient to only teach a pooch about obedience, as learning to sit and walk at heel will not have an impact when the canine is allowed to roam free without a lead.

“A collar and lead is the only equipment needed to have a well-behaved dog, it is how that equipment is used that is the issue,” he stated.

The expert pointed out the wide range of gadgets available to owners at present acts as a testament to the fact obedience training is not sufficient by itself.

Another issue owners may wish to address is socialisation, as dogs should not be charging at every person or animal they encounter.

Mr Havers suggested any animal that does not return to its walker when ordered to do should be considered to be out of control.
