People should have fun when training a dog

People should try to make training their dog as fun as possible, it has been suggested.

Jez Rose, canine behaviour specialist at The Behaviour Company and founder of the National Responsible Dog Owners campaign, noted many individuals tend to forget that dogs are animals and do not come with an instruction manual.

Mr Rose explained all behaviour problems are predictable and preventable, noting feeding by hand – and using food as a reward – is a great way to make sure a pooch is well trained.

Owners might therefore want to take food out with them on walks rather than leaving it in a bowl, as this will add extra value to the treats and make the four-legged friend view the pieces as rewards.

Mr Rose also recommended people make feeding time a more creative process that incorporates exercise.

He stated: “Get a great big handful and lob it all over the garden. So then the dog has to use its nose, its most important asset, to go and find all the bits.”
