Dog lovers protest beach ban proposals

Dog owners gathered on a beach in Portrush, Northern Ireland to protest plans made by Coleraine Council to ban them from walking their pets in various areas across the borough.

More than 1,000 people and their dogs took to the coast at the weekend (April 21st) to demonstrate their opposition to the proposals, which came about after numerous complaints were made to the local authority about pooches fouling on the beach and owners failing to clean up after them.

According to organiser of the protect William Gregg, the council’s intentions are “barking mad” and all responsible dog owners are being chastised.

He was quoted by UTV as saying: “The irresponsible owners have not cleaned up the waste that their dogs leave behind and it’s getting all the dog owners a bad press, which is highly unfair.”

As well as the beaches, dogs could be banned from other council-owned areas, such as Flowerfield and the Warren in Portstewart, Lansdowne.

This comes after similar regulations were implemented in the North Down, Newtownabbey and Belfast City Council areas under new Dog Order legislation.
