RSPCA commemorates pedigree dog exposure documentary

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has released a report to commemorate the broadcast of a landmark BBC documentary.

Pedigree Dogs Exposed was a Panorama production that collated research and anecdotal stories about the suffering canines go through if they are bred to become prize-winners at competitions.

The Kennel Club – organisers of the Crufts dog tournament, which takes place every year in Birmingham – is one of those the BBC documentary accused of being complicit in the breeding of animals in a way that is harmful to their health.

Jemima Harrison, who produced the 2008 TV programme, commented on the five year anniversary: “The Kennel Club has done very little to tackle the suffering these dogs endure, despite an increasing amount of science which both articulates the issues and offers solutions. The dogs continue to pay a huge price.”

RSPCA chief vet James Yeates agreed with Ms Harrison and added the charity was still doing all it can to encourage positive action in regards to reducing pedigree breeding.
