Number of stray dogs in Dorset increasing

The number of unwanted dogs reported in Dorset is on the rise, one local charity has warned.

According to Margaret Green Animal Rescue (MGAR), the amount of strays being brought in to the organisation is increasing and appeals are being launched to find a home for the rescued dogs, the Dorset Echo reports.

Helen Chittock, manager of MGAR’s Lincoln Farm Centre, said the few months following the Christmas period are always difficult for the shelter, as it copes with both abandoned pets and stray animals.

She explained she is unsure why more strays come in, adding: “Maybe people get puppies for Christmas and decide they do not want their older dog anymore, or maybe they buy a dog and decide they don’t really want it.”

At present, Ms Chittock stated the charity has more than 30 different dogs in its care that are all looking for a new home.

One stray pooch to be brought in was a golden German Shepherd called Caesar, who arrived with two large bleeding lumps on his back and tail and was taken to the vets for an operation.
