Six found guilty of cruelty to dogs

Six people have been found guilty of failing to meet the needs of 39 animals they were looking after.

Louise, Kirsty, Robert, Frederick and Angela Russell were all found guilty of putting dogs’ health in danger at their boarding kennels. Another woman, Abigail McHugh, was also said to be involved in the abuse.

Officers from the RSPCA visited Crunchy’s – which had been set up as a location for owners to leave their dogs while they went on holiday – and found appalling conditions.

Dogs were filthy and had obviously not been taken care of and many were forced to sleep in kennels covered in faeces.

RSPCA deputy chief inspector Kirst Withnall, who investigated the case, said: “Many of these animals had been entrusted to the care of the defendants by loving owners. Instead of the care promised, the animals were left in dirty, broken down buildings without vet treatment.”

Most of the canines have made full recoveries and are now back with their owners, although some are still going through an extensive rehabilitation programme to get them back to full strength.
