Ten guide dogs attacked every month

Around ten guide dogs are attacked every month by other out-of-control pets.

This is according to Guide Dogs – a charity that raises funds for canine assistants for blind or sight-restricted people.

The group released the figures to coincide with a debate in parliament by MPs on pet control – where it hopes stricter controls will be applied so its dogs can guide their owners more effectively.

More than 240 attacks on guide dogs were reported between March 2011 and February 2013 and in this time five dogs had to be taken out of service because of their injuries.

These incidents cost the charity more than £170,000 and a new report from the organisation shows the number of attacks from other canines has increased over the last 12 months.

Guide Dogs chief executive Richard Leaman said: “A change in the law can’t come quickly enough for our guide dog owners, who too often have to bear the devastating consequences of these attacks.”
