Plans to ban dogs at Coleraine beach cancelled

A Coleraine councillor has confirmed plans to ban dogs from beaches in the area are to be shelved.

Cllr Norman Hillis said public anger towards the proposal was so great they had to cancel the ban, which had been considered after complaints that dog owners had regularly failed to clean up after their pets, according to the BBC.

He promised those who protested the decision that they were “safe to walk their dogs” for the foreseeable future..

In April more than 700 dog owners in the area walked along a beach in Portrush to display their anger at the proposals, which they argued were over-the-top in comparison to the fouling problem in the region.

One visitor to the beach said: “You don’t see dog mess on the beach, it is very rare. There is actually a lot more rubbish and litter on the beach than dog fouling.”

However, pre-existing regulations that prevent dogs from being walked on certain beaches will still remain in force.
