Greedy dog wins unusual pet insurance claim award

A greedy dog which ate an entire bag of frozen onion rings and lived to tell the tale has been named as the year’s most unusual pet insurance claim.

The annual competition – run by Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) – honours bizarre claims in the US.

A claim of the month had been nominated over the past 12 months, before people were encouraged to vote for their favourite online to win the VPI Hambone Award.

The winner – Winnie, from Massachusetts – helped her vet scoop a $10,000 (£6,200) prize, which will be used to help patients who cannot normally afford to pay for their pet’s treatments.

Second place was awarded to a Siberian forest cat called Natasha, which was treated for shock after being locked inside a washing machine for a full washing cycle.

Chief veterinary officer of VPI Carol McConnell said: “Winnie and all of the other 2013 VPI Hambone Award nominees illustrate the need for pet owners to always be prepared for unexpected events.”

Over 6,000 people took part in voting for the awards, which were in their fifth incarnation.
