Roast dinner and steak among favourite food for dogs

Roast dinners, steak, and bangers and mash have been voted as favourite foods – for dogs.

Researchers from Butcher’s Lean and Tasty found the majority (75 per cent) of canine owners serve up such British classics to their pets, mainly as left-overs.

Other favourites included cottage pie, toad in the hole and full English breakfasts.

Over half of dogs shared snacks with their owners, with biscuits being the preferred option.

Clare Scallon, from Butcher’s Lean and Tasty, said: “We firmly believe that this aspect of ‘humanising’ dogs comes from the very real love and friendship owners feel towards their pets.”

She added there was no intention of maltreating the animals in giving them human food and there was no harm in sharing the odd meal or snack together.

The study was carried out on 2,000 owners to launch the Fittest Dog in the UK competition.

Researchers found those with dogs were keen to ensure their canine was exercised regularly. More than half (55 per cent) were walked daily, with the average dog walked twice-a-day at least five days a week, for an average of 23 minutes.
