About the Lhasa Apso Breed
The small size of the Lhasa Apso makes it a suitable apartment dog. Slightly longer than tall, the exercise needs of the dog can be met with a short walk or game each day, and could possibly be met with a game in the garden. It has a strong loin, even though it has never been bred for any work which requires any great physical strength or stamina.
With its long fur, the Lhasa Apso has a proud and wise look, with long eyebrow and beard hair framing the face. It can be a range of colours, including black, white, red, fawn or liver, and may have dark tips to its hair. The coat should not be woolly or silky, but somewhere in between, and very dense. Often, the dog will have hair down to the floor, giving it a skirted look.
The dog was initially bred as a companion and watch dog in monasteries in Tibet, and so is a calm sidekick, but may bark when strangers approach. It has an adventurous side, and will be eager to be a companion on a romp, but also just as happy sleeping next to its owner. It needs its long hair brushing every other day to keep its coat healthy.
