Reasons Why Dogs Lick Their Owners and Themselves

Dogs want to show affection to their owners. One of the ways in which dogs do this is by licking them. When dogs lick themselves, it’s also assumed that they are simply cleaning themselves. However, there are other explanations for both behaviours. If a dog licks themselves excessively, it could be a sign of something that might require action from the owner.

Licking is An Essential Function for Dogs

For dogs, the act of licking starts from the moment they are born. A mother will lick her puppies when they are born to clean them and stimulate breathing. It is her way of checking on her offspring and instantly acting on motherly instinct.

As puppies grow they will lick their mother’s mouth. This is a communication tool as well as a way of showing affection. As they get older, dogs will lick the dominant members of the pack to show that they are subordinate, therefore dogs lick their owners, to show that they know the human is in charge.

Licking is essentially a habit for a dog, with the human equivalent being nail biting. Completing such habits releases endorphins, hormones released by the brain that create feelings of pleasure. As a result, dogs are happy to lick their owners to show affection and that they are loyal to the dominant pack member.

Licking Could Be a Warning Sign for Owners

To some extent, dogs lick themselves to clean but not as much as cats. If a dog licks itself frequently, it may because they are bored. If that’s the case, owners should evaluate the amount of time their dog is left alone, how much they engage with their dogs or whether their dogs are getting enough walks.

Excessive licking can also be a dog’s way of relieving a skin condition or allergic reaction. These can be identified by things like red patches or sores or if they are concentrating on one particular spot. Owners should take their dog to the vet if they display any of these signs so that appropriate treatment can be received.

Generally, it shouldn’t be a problem if a dog likes to lick. However, it can become a behaviour issue if they do it too much. To deal with this, owners should not give their dog too much attention. Eventually, dogs will realise that their owner doesn’t like it and stop.
