Winter is generally the time where people become more susceptible to coughs, cold and the flu. The public have been hit with bouts of illness including the most recent Australian Flu. What is somewhat surprising is that dogs have also been suffering from cases of the flu, with thousands of dogs affected in the US. It is important for pet owners to be aware of dog flu. Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) is one of the causes of kennel cough. The virus is relatively new with most dogs having never been exposed to it at all.
How Does Dog Flu Spread?
The virus is airborne, so it spreads when an infected dog coughs, barks or sneezes. Dogs catch the virus by being near an infected dog. Although the virus can’t survive for long outside of the body, it can still be transferred through dogs sharing their toys, food, water and bedding.
Transfer of dog flu can also be potentially transferred if a person pets an infected dog and pets another or their own dog soon after. Dog flu is most contagious before the infected dog has even shown any symptoms. As a result, it is important for owners to know what to look for when monitoring their pets.
Symptoms of dog Flu
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Runny nose
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Tiredness
- Difficulty breathing
Much like the human version of flu, dogs will make a full recovery in most cases. Nevertheless, complications can occur due to lack of treatment and secondary infections like pneumonia.
How is Dog Flu Treated?
An infected dog may be put on antivirals if the illness is caught at an early stage. Antibiotics may be used as well to support the immune system whilst dogs fight off the virus. Other dogs may need IV fluids and medication to reduce their fever. Either way, all dogs with the flu need access to plenty of fresh water to keep them hydrated and help recovery.
It is extremely important that dog owners keep an eye out for symptoms of dog flu. If there is cause for concern or any uncertainty, a vet must be visited. They know exactly what to look for and what course of action will need to be taken to help an infected dog.
