Pet award success could be in store for former rescue dog

Hopes are high in North Yorkshire that a former rescue dog can triumph at an upcoming prize-giving event.

Named JJ, the nine-year-old golden lurcher has been selected as one of 12 pooches to compete for the title of 2012/2013 Pets As Therapy Dog of the Year – the winner of which will be unveiled at Crufts in March.

The canine is in line for this recognition due to his work at the Able Centre in Colburn – run by the Broadacres Housing Association – where he provides company to people suffering from a wide range of disabilities.

This includes accompanying residents on walks and playing games of fetch.

Manager of the Able Centre Lynn Tomkinson explained JJ is brought into the centre four days a week, adding everyone involved at the home are delighted he is going to Crufts.

Ms Tomkinson stated: “We will all be keeping our fingers crossed that he wins. He certainly deserves it.”

Stories of all the dogs up for the award will be featured in Yours magazine, with readers of the publication able to vote for the pooch they feel is most deserving of the prize.
